MONTE DE OMBUÉS

Mount Ombúes (50 km from the Posada) is a rarity, because ombúes are solitary trees. They are wild in Argentina, Brazil, Peru and Uruguay. The scientific name is Phytolacca dioica. The word Ombú is of Guarani origin and means shadow. It is under discussion whether it is a species of tree, shrub or giant grass. The ombú is a dioecious tree. This means that the same ombú do not have male flowers and female flowers, but there are ombúes with male sex organs and others with female sex organs.
